Speeding my recovery.

stars of the summer night

We used to sing this in elementary school. Web search says it’s Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

All these decades later and it will sometimes still pop into my head, while driving, while cycling, while having a tense moment at work.

Stars of the Summer Night

  1. Stars, stars of the summer night,
Far, far in yon azure deeps
    Hide, hide your golden light,
    She sleeps, my lady sleeps.
She sleeps, she sleeps, my lady sleeps.
  2. Moon, moon of the summer night,
Far, far down yon western steeps
    Sink, sink in silver light,
    She sleeps, my lady sleeps.
She sleeps, she sleeps, my lady sleeps.
  3. Wind, wind of the summer night,
    Where yonder woodbine creeps,
    Fold, fold thy pinnions light,
    She sleeps, my lady sleeps.
She sleeps, she sleeps, my lady sleeps.

salad bar

I got us both a Covid salad for dinner. 😏

day ride

Continuing with my DIY rehab, i.e. cycling.

Selfies.

One is behind the old Sears warehouse on Lawndale. Sometimes I imagine that the entire building is full of people in cages being transited.

The other is Cone Boulevard tunnel. So pleasant to go underneath all that busy car traffic.

wicked

I’m hoping this will be worthwhile.

fun youtuber i like buys pickup from rental car company

I was watching a favorite YouTuber last night transmitting from the driver seat of his 2019 Dodge Ram.

He said he had rented it to do some moving. While turning it back into the rental company, he said, “I like this truck so much, can I just buy it?” They sold it to him.

I’d love to be able to buy something like that so casually. I was also thinking that for the rental car company, he was a helluva customer.

silent movie – the mysterious lady – 1928

Last night Brian and I watched MGM’s next-to-last silent movie, The Mysterious Lady (1928). It was on TCM channel (Turner Classic Movies).

Sometimes I cannot stay engaged with silent movies because the print is bad, projection speed is wrong, and/or the music is bizarre. TCM had one of the most perfect presentations of a silent I’ve ever seen in this one, and it made it easy to follow.

Another reason it was easy to follow, stars Greta Garbo and Conrad Nagel did wonderful acting and were roaring hot. I kept hoping that they would strip each other down to the skin. Those two would later star in MGM’s last silent, The Kiss (1929). I need to see that one sometime.

It was quite the experience, being that I’m not used to silent films. All that from the years my parents were being born.

In the 1980’s, I watched many Mexican silents in an art house cinema in Guadalajara. It was a great way to learn the language. It’s much easier to understand short blasts of written Spanish on the screen than constant audio. One helped me graduate into another and see great movies at the same time.

vicente fernandez

Mexican icon and one of the most famous voices in the world, singer Vicente Fernandez has died at age 81.

This in my pic of him, sin sombrero, on an “on sale” television in Sanborns in Guadalajara in 2015. Strange what I photograph.

inflation

I was talking to a financial professional on Friday. He always seems knowledgeable.
He mentioned the inflation rate of 7% saying that it’s really 14% by the way we used to count it.
Wouldn’t surprise me.
We also talked about several other topics of great interest. 😅
