For me, this is a good story with references to Asheville, North Carolina, Gastonia, Loray Mill, exploitation, US South, labor movements, lots of things. There are plenty of links and references for further study.
My job frequently takes me to another plant beside the famous old Loray Mill in Gastonia. The mill is now loft apartments, what else is new, but I can still look at the building and think of all the things that happened there.
The first summer I ever went to Mexico, I was out in bumfuk Colima, and a friend offered to let me drive his father’s high-horsepower Ford Maverick.
I was barely able to put the Spanish together at that time, but I understood “¿Sabes manejar un estándar?” (You know how to drive a clutch?)
Neither one of us knew if it was legal for me to drive there as I slid into the driver’s seat. He let me drive that rocket around on the country roads for a while. I’d never driven a car with so much horsepower (tantos caballos).
My friend ended up the event by saying, “Eres un buen automovilista.” (You are a good motorist).
This is my friend Cesar from Colima driving his father’s pickup. Nice guy. I didn’t have to do handstands to be his friend. He was so patient with my borked Spanish. 1980-ish.
This was in an email I received today. Uh huh, this don’t work. Disappointed.

And as November approaches, we’ll need to hold our noses and fight hard for the boring centrist candidate, the one who at least gives lip-service to caring for people.
That, it turns out, is extremely important: it’ll enable us to hold his feet to the fire with all the (nonviolent) means at our disposal
Here we go again with the Grahams (#1 thing to do in Charlotte). Billy Graham sought the right hand of Presidents through the decades. The Graham industry reminds me of Anita Bryant (Florida oranges circa 1970’s) but has much more power.
I shouldn’t have gone, but I had lunch one time at the Cracker Barrel restaurant nearest the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte. The talk I heard in there was amazing! I shoulda worn a Pride shirt.
I walk by the Samaritan’s Purse “Operation Christmas Child” warehouse and packing center in Charlotte all the time. I think they pack up little boxes of things to give to children in African countries in front of cameras which unsustainably goofs up local economies. How that giant luxurious building on Nations Ford Road can sit all but idle most of the year is beyond me. I suspect tax “incentives” all over. Maybe like Hobby Lobby, it resembles a church.
There is also a freighter jet from Samaritan’s Purse that sits out at Greensboro airport regularly.
In NYC, “The Purse” will serve “the gays”, kinda nice, but don’t come volunteering.
Another LOL from the New York Times. At least the word “normal” is in quotes, as it should be. Was it normal before, and is that a desired state to which to return?
It’s a good click-bait headline, but I won’t go, so I won’t know about the article. I’ve stopped visiting links to the NYT, Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, The Guardian, and others. They are such active performers for the USA’s “Mighty Wurlitzer” that I won’t follow a link for any reason, not even for entertainment pieces, though one could say all of it is entertainment.
screenshot of NYT headline, Why the Presidency can’t just go back to “normal” after Trump.
