trekking poles

Brian got me a pair of trekking poles as a Christmas gift.

Age-related knee pain had reduced my range and comfort to the point to where hiking was barely possible. There was always anxiety that I would get too far out and not be able to return.

The trekking poles are more helpful than I ever expected. It’s like a reset of years. The little bit of effort saved per step really adds up. I can now go on a hike and still do other things in the same day.

I am aware that there can be environmental impact with these. I’m reading up on how to minimize.

Cycling remains being a good activity due to low impact. It is nice to be able to walk and hike again, too.

Why TF are “Occupy Democrats” and “Ridin’ With Biden” shambling down my FB newsfeed? Sick.

tamales and coffee for breakfast

A bag of Christmas tamales, a gift from some beloved friends, was dropped off yesterday, so we had them for breakfast. They go well with coffee. I could live off of those things.

guadalajara hangover remedies

This article gives five hangover remedies Jalisco style.

One of them is menudo. Menudo: a traditional Mexican soup, made with beef tripe. It is said to have tremendous curative powers for hangovers. Places that sold it did a brisk business on Sunday mornings.

I like trying new customs, sometimes even adopting them as my own, but menudo is one that I stood firmly against and never wavered.

Sometimes on weekend mornings a group from the clubbing of the night before would head out for menudo and invite me. I stood firm against the exhortations and sometimes insults. It was all done in good fun.

— it really works like nothing else
— it’s almost magic
— you’ll be better before noon
— you gringos are so weak
— why do you not like Mexico?

My response was usually, “y’all go on. I’ll stop off for a pizza or a giant hamburger.” Eyes would roll.

Cold pizza and orange juice was good enough for me. It’s still a go-to, but I don’t get real hangovers anymore. I can’t take it.

got the coffee shakes

The latest bag of coffee I bought at Starbucks is so good that I can’t stop drinking it. I keep going until I’m a shaking mess. I’m flirtin’ with disaster.

holiday coffee

All take home bagged coffee on sale at the Bux until the end of this week. I bought some as gifts plus a couple of drinks for me and Brian. I like the timing of this sale.

They have the right kind of grinder in the store, so if you want it ground, they’ll grind it perfectly for whatever device you use to brew.

I used to grind at home, but now I don’t feel like it anymore. It’s a bit laborious to do it right.
