i never get a good throbber anymore

For years web browsers came with nice throbbers. Not anymore. Now you mostly get a little black wheel thing in the tab. In Opera I like the pop-up progress bar when things are loading, but that's not a throbber really, but that's OK because we all love Opera for being different.

I always liked the old Netscape ship's wheel splash screen and the comet throbber. On dialup you got to watch those comets fly for a very long time. At least they were pretty. You could even change the throbber to something cute, like a running dog with a newspaper in its mouth.

Netscape throbber:

Way back in the dark ages, I used to watch the planet-and-nodes throbber on the NCSA Mosaic browser:

By far the best throbber ever was the Mosaic "folding panes" throbber. It goes way back but was the one I saw first and always liked the best.

In the screenshot below, you can just barely see the folding panes in the upper right corner, but they aren't moving because it's just a screenshot. They were pretty and I remember being in awe the first time I saw somebody fetching graphical webpages with this browser. If anybody ever sees an image of the moving "folding panes" throbber, please let me know.

  1. Damn! The oldest browser I remember using was IE5. And, I remember using Netscape Navigator as well. xD Good ol' days. πŸ˜†

  2. That was probably about the time they were called Internet Exploder and Nutscrape.

  3. LMFAO! I use that term! (Internet Exploder)

:lol:yeah I used Nutscrape as an alternate for the internet exploder back then, never really liked IE from the word go πŸ˜›

  5. at first glance, i thought a throbber was some sort of sex toy πŸ˜†

The post title was indeed chosen to confuse. πŸ˜€

  7. There were lots of complaints about Nutscrape back then, about its specialized html tags, and it sure was crashy, but it was the one I always chose. It would do server-push streaming chat (a la WBS) and the others wouldn't. Netscape green looked so nice, and the name Navigator made me feel as if I really were on an adventure (the ship's wheel).MSIE, as IE was called back then, would jerk the webpages all around as the images slowly loaded on dialup. Never liked the spinning planet throbber.Opera came along and boasted for awhile that it would fit on a single 3.5 inch floppy (1.44mb). You could save it on one of those and install it everywhere. Now there are so many good browsers from which to choose.

  8. πŸ˜† i hope some day we all can meet in person

We'll go to a restaurant and thoroughly trash out a table like I've seen in your pics. πŸ™‚

  10. sounds good to me!!

  11. OMG I remember using MOSAIC!

  12. Being an engineer I never liked those things… I liked the bar of w3m (which I still use from time to time) and therefore, the progress bar replacing the address bar in Opera is perfect for me πŸ˜›

  13. Yeah, I miss good throbbers…No doubt Opera would conquer like 80% of the market once they come up with a good throbber πŸ˜†
