if you could retire tomorrow

If you could stop working tomorrow and still have a guaranteed income, where would you like to have a place?

For me, some of these might do:

Hmmm, México seems to be a winner.

Required of any location:

  1. Strong Internet connection.
  2. Freak friends.

  1. North Wales North WalesNorth WalesNorth WalesNorth WalesDid mention I love North Wales

  2. For me it would be the town of Eforie Sud, hands down. I spent all my summers there as a kid; it's a nice quiet town at the Black Sea shore, with a long history and a stable present.See also: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=eforie+sud

  3. I love these stucco houses in Merida that are joined together for miles and miles. These aren't the coolest ones, but I want a fixer-upper. The houses can be painted wild bright colors. These are tame. This pic is from 2003. The white VW was our rental. Fun car.Merida has strong Internet everywhere and the plazas are always full of people. Now I just need the money.

  4. Grant's Pass, Oregon 🙂

  5. Any small, old town with working art galleries, coffee shops, aroma therapy parlors, bead and other craft shops, eateries of all kinds of different foods. There's a few areas in downtown Phoenix that are like this but, unfortunately, the old homes are from $500,000 up…even the fixer uppers. The ones already renovated are $1 mil.

I forgot all about the Phoenix area. That would be a nice place, or Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, etc. I liked the houses that had yards at least partially of rocks or sand.

  7. Between 7th St. and 7th Ave. around McDowell Rd. is a very old area of homes. Tempe's got some great old homes. Between classes, I used to walk around the old neighborhoods. Unfortunately, some of them are rentals to the college students and are getting run down. Flagstaff and Prescott are great old towns too.

  8. modest pied-a-terres inVancouver, BC (home base)Paris, France (not Texas)London, UK (not Ontario)Kuala Lumpur (but only within walking distance of KLCC)Hawaii (somewhere – to be defined)Boston (in the old part of town)Portland (where Mr. B lives, preferably)Oakland And that's about it. I'm not greedy 😀 😀

Everybody knows the *real* one is in Texas. Also, Columbia is the capital of South Carolina not that misspelled Colombia next to Venezuela. Also, the Eiffel Tower is really located in the Bordeaux Shopping Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina.http://www.bordeauxcenter.com/"Bordeaux Center has been one of Fayetteville's favorite places to shop since 1963. It is well known for its replica of the Eiffel Tower.":D 😆

  10. I would say Kawit, in Cavite, the wife is from there and even as its poor, there's a sense of calm and simple living, no stress

  11. For me…….Plettenberg Bay, Sunny South Africa. 🙂

  12. I'm not yet old enough to retire to one place, and haven't yet experienced enough places to make that decision, so I'd travel around for a while.I'll let you know in another 20 years on where I'll end up. 🙂

  13. Matt I actually agree with you. I woul get a 4wheel drive car and travel through Africa and show my kids this beautiful continent.

  14. Or buy a big ass motor home and live where ever your heart desires

  15. The word "retirement" has always scared me. I'm a guy that likes to stay active and busy. Still though, it is a really good question. Guaranteed income you say. Travel, see all the world, and be part of those places (keeping busy). I would ALWAYS need an internet connection with a big throughput. Blog on location, lol. Thanks for the post. J.

  16. for me its newyork!newyork!

  17. Easy answer – Phoenix! Or northern AZ. I lived there for over 10 years and then moved back to PA.Huge mistake. Huge.

  18. Wyoming. 100%

  19. Surabaya, Indonesia

  20. Although the U.S. has some wonderful areas I havenlt seen yet, I would love to visit or even live in Belize. I would love to see what the Mayans were/are up to….

de acuerdo   I'm so "into" Mexico in so many ways and for so many years that, at times, I have desired to try for citizenship. Though as hated as it can be in some places, Old Blue can come in very handy sometimes, so I'd have to be a "dual" or no changes at all.

  28. If i can go to anyplace i would chose… Lebanon, it's really my favorit place ever… Love it 😉

  29. Congrats !! this article has made it into the community page :):cheers:

  30. Mexico is awesome, just stay away from the U.S./Mexico border towns and it becomes a very friendly place.

  31. I would travel around the world motorcycle tour, which is my big dream.============================================================eu faria a volta ao mundo de moto, que é meu grande sonho.msn: josematos@live.com

  32. For me,obudu cattle ranch,TINAPA in Nigeria, where we have 3 weather in a day, rainy, sunny and both. So tell me wat do think? Think of embarking on this tour let me know. royale1307@yahoo.com

  33. I am retired on a retirement income. I can tell you what it really means. There is so much to do that I really don't see how I ever found time to 'work'. I just stayed where I have been for 27 years, and work with the many friends I have, with a Christian Ministry, and with my wife, children and grand children. I have, what I think, is a wonderful life.steve

  34. I retired at a young age in '02 and have gone nowhere. I'm happy at home with my wife and daughter. If did go somewhere it would be to go back to Australia just to travel around, go skiing in the Pyrenees or Carpathians, visit St. Petersburg (the real one in the Russian Federation), visit Lake Baikal, and go somewhere so remote that I can see the stars the way I could when I was a kid, and live there happily. Ambitious, isn't it?

  35. It is the way God created us to live. Read the book of Genesis in the Christian Bible. No where does it say that Adam and Eve had to work for a living. They had work to do, right, but their living did not depend on their work. And they did not seem to have any deadlines.

  36. I can vouch for Joplin, MO. I was born in Ozark, not too far away. It is truly a peaceful country, or was.

I must say that's quite an interesting and eclectic assortment. Nice comment.I've enjoyed all the places and comments. It's fun looking them up on Wikipedia and Flickr.

  38. Joplin is much more peaceful than Tulsa,OK and has more of a Natural feeling to me. I Only like Tulsa for the shopping.

  39. JapanItalyJoplin MissouriSomewhere in Oklahoma thats beautiful calm and friendly.

  40. Major cities in Asia would the trick!

  41. To try to be a little humorous, if I wanted to base the question on the attractiveness of the people, anywhere in Cuba would be great. They are *good looking*. I've never seen so many handsome/beautiful people. I don't know how they did it! lol. Now, if you're into consumer goods or shopping, there's not a lot there, plus it might take you a few minutes to get used to the government. 😀

  42. Shillong, meghalaya, India

  45. Somewhere with mountains, but by the sea! and away from the masses…. Oh! Nowhere too hot either.Luckily I'm in Scotland and don't have to go far for that… But I guess there are many places that would fit this description.Canada(preferably northern BC).The Lofoten islands(or somewhere else in Norway with mountains and sea in the same view).Southern Chile.I kinda like it here in Scotland though 😀

  47. Now I think of it, they do make damn good wine!

  48. I retired 2 years ago and I dropped everything that sounded like work. I have seen many nice places but they all have changed. I'm going to stay put as long as I can. 😆

There is a lot to be said for that. New York City is one of those places where having a car actually reduces your mobility, so you can forget the car and all the hassles involved. If you need a car, you can rent one. If you want to get out of town for a weekend, Philadelphia is just down the road. Such good places.

  50. Me too, Peter
