the wizard of oz on tv last night

The Wizard of Oz was on TV last night. From 1939, this legendary film was old even before I was able to understand what a movie was. I remember as a child, we'd watch it every year around Christmastime on CBS. Fans of this movie know why the beginning and end of it are in black and white, and the rest in color. My dad bought our family's first color television set in the 60's, and I remember the set would let out pops and crackles from the picture tube when the movie changed to color. It was rather exciting, lol. Those old color TV's were full of hot-running vacuum tubes. Heat rolled out the back of them and the house lights would dim momentarily when the set was turned on from the large electrical "gulp". I remember in 1969, just hours before the first Apollo lunar landing, our set blew a tube, and my dad and I went all over town to find a replacement before those astronauts got out of The Eagle.

Anyway, "The Wizard of Oz" is a wonderful movie to me. Jaw-droppingly high-tech for 1939, the acting, dancing, and music all give me much pleasure, though as a child, the movie often stressed me out and made me cry. There are so many famous quotes that come from this film, or rather from the book it was based on. "I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore". "I'll get you my pretty". "We're off to see the Wizard". "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain".

The cast was so amazing, all of them. There's almost nothing cuter than Judy Garland as "Dorothy".

The only pain about watching it last night on TNT was the constantly flipping animated adverts covering the bottom third of the screen. I was also not that fond of the enhanced over-saturated color and the synthetic surround sound that seemed to bounce from speaker to speaker. I guess I'll have to get the DVD to enjoy it even more. I hope the DVD is not similarly "enhanced" as well.

Oh, have you ever seen the deleted "jitterbug" dancing scene? It's fabulous. I'm always moved when I see people doing a good jitterbug. My elderly mother can still do a bit of it, enough to show me how she could "cut a rug" when she was younger.

  1. You were probably adorable in front of that television as a child. Nobody ever suspected your eggnog was so heavily laced with rum. :p Where do you download your movies? Well, maybe you shouldn't post that here. 😉

  2. Ah thanks. I was curious. I'm a usenet junkie.
