the dreaded but expected myopera announcement finally arrives

They shutting 'er down in four months.

I registered here in 2001 though I didn't post regularly until a few years later.

I had been thinking about deleting my blog for awhile now. It's been great here. I just want a lot less of me online. The announcement will at least save me from agonizing over making a decision.

MyOpera is my last online "thing" where I still use an alias. Over the past few years, I have moved to posting things online under my real name. It feels better that way, though I do measure my words more.

I currently have a Facebook account, Google Plus, and Diaspora, all where my real identity is in use. Once I get this blog scrubbed, I'll put up links to those so contact can still be maintained.

I still don't know where to go post Opera, or even if I want to go anywhere. Maybe I'll just stick with the three aforementioned services, or I suppose I could go one more round using a pseudo identity somewhere.

WordPress might do. I don't know. The fun "community" stuff I like about myopera is not really there. Maybe traditional blogging by commoners like me has passed its prime.

Still thinking it over.

This post needs at least one little word of profanity, so fuck!

  1. Neah, long-form blogs aren't going anywhere. But once My Opera is gone, I'll have no incentive to post personal stuff anywhere else, except perhaps on my own website. There's always Twitter, but like FB and G+ it's a walled garden, so it doesn't count unless you're already there. It's not going to be easy, keeping in touch…

  2. Felix, you have been a nice part of my experience here. I still have some of your writing on my desk. I hope we can still follow each other after Opera sinks this ship.I'm still thinking about the walled gardens, etc. I favor unwalled things, but they (pods) come and go, and reliability is less. I don't want to run my own webserver, and I might stop paying for the one I hire to run my domains. So many issues to toss about.

  3. Well, if you're giving up your own domains, I guess you can follow me. I plan to keep mine up unless my finances become really bad, which is unlikely. Basically, if you subscribe to:http://felix.plesoianu.ro/http://felix.plesoianu.ro/wiki/http://notimetoplay.org/http://www.flickr.com/photos/felixp7/You'll have a good idea of what I'm up to.

  4. Here I am on FB, in case you want to stay in touch:https://www.facebook.com/pamela.sabbia

  5. I could hardly believe it when I read about this on Facebook. My life changed so much once I moved and became my granddaughter's caretaker that I've hardly been on Opera the last two…no three years….and now it will be gone! David I always got a kick out of your random off-the-wall posts. At my worst moments, I'd come read one of them, LOL, then I'd be fine for the day.

  6. I hate this idea and the fact that I got my account from my Wii Console and now they have to shut down it all πŸ˜₯ πŸ˜₯ πŸ˜₯ πŸ˜₯

  7. I'll bet he'll put all of the post on another blog, there is so many to choose from. Tumblr, BlogSpot, WordPress, etc

Yeah… that's the kind of thing that makes communities precious, and their disappearance a loss. I hope you'll keep blogging about your Canadian adventures elsewhere. It was always a blast reading about them.

I always think of the fun we had over "Dots" candy.

  11. Even though the closing is four months away, I already feel rushed.

  12. Many important people people in my life are/were here. There's Ruben, Violeta, Dave, obviously, Pechkin, Harry, Narcisa, and several others that made my stay here a strong and meaningful experience.I've been here for over ten years. Nothing ever rivaled what has been created here by Jon von Tetzschner and the world community of people that I've had the good fortune of meeting. I've watched some of them grow in to adults. Others have become people who have affected and changed my everyday Real World life outside of My Opera in ways that can not be enumerated, and for which I'll be forever grateful. (Harry, I use Linux Mint to this day because of you).I have no kind words for anyone that would willingly throw all that away. Especially if their impetus is market-based.Yeah, we did see it coming, and I'd already deleted everything last year when it was rumored that Opera might be bought by facebook. It'll go faster this time. Even still, I'm numb.Andrewhttp://blog.darkland.org

  13. I'm starting to wonder if WordPress is any fun at all. There is a lot of confusion about WordPress in the opera announcement. People keep saying you have to have a website to run it.For the WordPress software offered at wordpress.org , yes, you have to have a place to run it.There is also wordpress.com where you can just sign up and use it. Could that site be any fun? Any community?Looks halfway decent:http://en.wordpress.com/features/

Good one. Thinking about it. I wouldn't be opposed to buying a domain to go with it, just for the fuck of it.

  15. I'm pretty confident there is no community analogue to the one here, but this looks compelling:http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/import-from-opera/It can't hurt to try. If things go bad, simply delete, and start over.

WordPress.com definitely has some community features, but an actual community? I'm not sure. Got several friends there, and I simply follow their blogs individually. (Granted, I only have an account on wordpress.org, not wordpress.com). Feature-wise, though, WP is potentially way more powerful than My Opera. But of course not quite as easy to use…

Interesting! :sherlock: I have been thinking if I should import my blog or start new.

  18. I keep thinking about wordpress on my own domain server at nearlyfreespeech.net. Complete control, but I think I'll be alone out there community-wise, and it subjects me to image hotlinking, etc. I already run a couple of wordpresses this way, both of which are just informational with no expectation of community.wordpress.com at least has the potential of commmunity, and hotlinking, upgrades, etc., will be the problem of wordpress. Still looking into it.Some are talking about Tumblr. I don't know if it will import.

  19. Well that's interesting, I just commented that I'm Speechless about the announcement. I read Dave's header yesterday, but went no further cuz I got busy. Then I just read the announcement. πŸ˜₯ reading some comments now. Painter woman. Great idea to share Facebook and Twitter information. On Facebook you can request me as a friend Carol J Burton. On Twitter @DontBe_Cruel. I'm so sad about this. Carol

  20. Well shit, I'm leaving both comments up! Lol

  21. Omg! I saw Dave's header yesterday but didn't read the announcement until just now. #wtf. Although I don't blog a lot I love all of you πŸ˜₯ I'm not surprised, but still devastated. I'm just Speechless…. Carol

    I would. Love 'em.

You sure did! I'm going on a posting frenzy because I now feel that my time is metered.

  25. I guess I saw this coming due to the dwindled user activity on the site. The only thing that has me ticked off is that I truly thought the email service was going to last for awihle longer than expected, so I used it for over 20+ social networks. Now I gotta remember which ones I signed up for. I already switched my main one's to my professional email no one knows about.

  27. Well, I have Twitter/tumblr/Behance/linkedin/Google+/Issu/three or four others including Facebook, and none of them is any damned fun compared to Opera. Sort of passing of an era for me. I hope to stay in touch with some Opera friends, but that sense of openness and freedom that exist here just doesn't exist anywhere else for me.

I know that feeling, too.Originally posted by JoshuaPhelps:

Finally, I'm getting my master password file organized with this type info: which accounts use which e-mail. I also use opera's xmpp server, which has always kind of sucked, and sometimes I log onto the IRC. No telling if those are going down, too.Originally posted by 0x29a:

    I like, lol.

  30. It was not really a surprise… I found it strange to receive a lot of friend requests from vietnam. Something was not right, so I basically moved to other shores. After an ever-changing phase, I kind of settled in G+ with Friends+me for F and T integration. So far I am liking it. Use it for both silly and serious stuff.I have searched for slackwrdave but could not find you 😦 https://plus.google.com/u/0/+AndresRodriguezGuapacha

  31. Andres (Fox)!I was hoping I would see you before the shutdown. I'll see you on G+.
