desayuno mexicano, mexican breakfast

After my yogurt/grape-nuts post below, I started thinking about what eating breakfast in Mexico has done to me. Noooo, not that, lol! What I'm getting at is the idea of eating beans at breakfast had never appealed to me before my many trips to Mexico.

When I can get it, I like to have the following for breakfast in Mexico: scrambled eggs with some chorizo, refried beans, avocado slices, tortillas, some fruit, and coffee. A little ketchup on the eggs is sometimes ok.

That is a "sticks to your ribs" breakfast that will keep for from getting hungry for a long time. Health food is all over Mexico, too. The 100% Natural chain is a true dining pleasure.

Another good eat at any time of the day is Mexican bread and pastries. I think Mexico is rivaling France on this art form. I LOVE Mexican pastries. They come in so many varieties, and they are usually just lightly sweet, which is how I prefer pastries. I can't stand things that are cloyingly sweet.

Mexican bakeries are all over North Carolina now, so I can have these treats at any time, not just when I'm south of the border. The process in the bakery is the same, whether here or in Mexico. You come in and grab a metal tray and some tongs. Fill up your tray with lots of whatever looks good because they aren't going to cost much. Pay the cashier, then go and enjoy. When my partner and I do our long road trips across Mexico, we always load up at these bakeries for our road snacks in case we get hungry before we find suitable food.

I find Mexican cuisine amazing in so many ways. From the simple to the complex, I like it all.

  1. Hey Gary, I agree totally on the cheese on the beans. I forgot about that. I love all the cheeses from Mex., especially the white ones.Barbacoa! Yumm. I had some barbacoa tacos the other day at this little place. As I get older, more and more stuff starts to mess with my stomach, so I have to be careful, but the tacos were as good as those I've had inside Mexico. Yummy! I also had some very good gorditas (pic) there.A couple of decades ago when I was hanging out in Guadalajara more, a bunch of us would go out drinking on the weekends, and afterwards we'd stop at the all-night taquería and put down some major tacos. Nothing would satisfy the munchies better. I like the itty-bitty tacos that are only about 3 inches across and are soft. I don't like those large hard "Taco Bell" style ones that are more popular in the usa.As for sweets, a Chelsea Bun or Apple Crumble sound like winners to me. Confections from the Old World are almost always appealing to Americans since we have a short history and a scarcity of traditions.I found myself in London briefly back during the 80's, and the first thing I wanted was some fish 'n chips in the brown wrapper (or was it newspaper?). My friends from London were a bit annoyed at me having to have that immediately upon arrival, lol.Back to Mexico. Many purists take a dim view of Cancun. I assume that they think that it's not authentic or it's an extremely warped part of Mexico, which I guess it is, but by golly it's FOOD CENTRAL. There are chefs and cooks from all over Mexico, and all over the world there, and man I can put it all down. I have to get a lot of exercise afterwards to watch my weight. Usually Mayan pyramid climbing takes care of that.Too bad I don't have any real travel money saved up this year. 😦
