too much free time this week

Contrary to expectations, I AM NOT spending all of my week off getting drunk and on the Internet. 😀

Out of lack of anything else to do, I will post some of the things I did today.

  • Read a few news stories: this one, this one, this one, this one, and looked at this.
  • Did an hour of texting with two freak friends.
  • Against my better judgement, I posted some to the Opera forums and immediately regretted it. Within minutes the threads were wrecked my some 58 y/o immature weirdo from Australia. It just goes to prove that being nearly 60 doesn't mean anything, and that public forums and IRC are just as hopeless now as they were 10 years ago.
  • Went to Great Clips for a cheap haircut because I got a coupon in the mail. Usually I like expensive salon treatments, but it was hard to pass up a haircut for $7.95. I left a $5 tip because they always take good care of my mother there.
  • Went to Rose's (a local discount retailer) to pick up lots of camping supplies for our trip this fall. Now, where is it we're going? You don't remember?
  • Got a ton of takeout for Brian and myself from the nearby Mexican restaurant so we could eat in front of the TV then pass out on the sofa.
  • Thought of this guy for a few minutes. Yumm!
  • Updated all software on the webserver and checked for the usual compromises and bandwidth theft from Russia and India.
  • Came back to my opera for the fifteenth time today.
  • Opened another beer.

  1. Hey, what were your posts in the forum? Maybe I could contribute?

  2. The myopera server dragging around and stopping for several days. It seems better now.Added later: actually it's the same. Sooo slow, stops a lot.

  3. I deleted all my stuff and left. I didn't want my ID anywhere near that stuff. Thanks for the willingness to jump in. Sometimes that's fun.

  4. Ah OK. Sheesh! I thought it would be ripe with controversy! How can somebody drag on about something like this and even cause you to delete your entries?! Sigh… the internets are full of trolls and fanboys, even (or especially?) here

  5. So… what was it about, if that's OK to ask?

You'd think I'd be used to it by now, but I was amazed at the speed of the usual net behavior. I don't do well in public forums. The blog part of my opera is fine because it is controllable, and the serious members have some personal investment in their blogs and behaviour.Another funny one is when I hear, "oh, you can get so much Linux help on IRC." Yeah, have at it. Not me. If I can't fix something through web searches, it don't get fixed.

  7. Hmmm, this is getting fun. I might make an entire post about topics that bring out the crazies. :jester: I'll run it as a background mental process today as I do my chores and see if I get anywhere with it.Sometimes I see posts and forum threads that make me say to myself, "OMG, this is going to bring out the nutballs, and yes, they will be American." 😀

Same here. I have a feeling those people will devour you alive…

  9. Reminds me of a community that I was a member of once. On my first visit I made one post in one forum thread. Mine was the only reply to that thread. I logged in the next day and that thread had stretched to three pages! Two people had attacked my posting and then other members of the forum had stuck up for me for the next three pages. Interesting! :irked:

  10. There's a well known public forum I used to post on till a few of them started attacking me for whatever reason and saying really vile and vicious stuff. They'd also put up gross photos of people taking dumps (or worse) and saying it was me. Sorry…probably TMI. Needless to say, I stopped commenting there because, obviously, there were no moderators able to control the trolls with multiple computers and multiple names/accounts.My week will be spent trying to figure out why my new printer doesn't work, why my pc has become incredibly slow after installing the new anti virus, and why one of the security updates fails to install. Will probably have to visit the Windows Update forum. Maybe there's one for the HP printer too. Called The Geek Squad two weeks ago and they will come out to fix things, answer all my questions, etc. for $98. I'll also have 6 mos. of support for that too. But my daughter got wind of that and said she'd look at it because she doesn't want me to spend any money. That was two weeks ago when I asked my daughter a question about the new anti virus I bought. They were going to put me on theirs six months ago. Enough whining by me now……so back upstairs to check if my granddaughter has awakened from her nap yet. I wore her out on our mall walk today.

  11. Pam, if I recall correctly, you mentioned a couple months ago that you'd be installing avast Anti-Virus.What Anti-Virus did you have before avast, IF that is indeed what you have now installed? Are you absolutely sure you uninstalled your old Anti-Virus thoroughly? Because whenever remnants are left over from an old Anti-Virus, the new Anti-Virus will encounter all sorts of problems, including slowdowns, even down to a crawl.I'd say give your daughter a crack at your computer first. I have yet to hear any good things about the Geek Squad. You might also toss your problem at the avast Forums IF avast is what you installed.

  12. Hey Pam. I don't know enough about Windows to help, but I like Suntana's thoughts about the possible existence of the old anti-virus software. When I have messed with Windows, I seem to remember running a command, "msconfig", to see what was auto-starting and deselecting what I didn't want. Beware, when it comes to Windows, I don't know what I'm talking about.I used to run AVG anti-virus on my mom's computer, and it seemed heavy. Avast seemed lighter. Now DON'T do this one because it's a scam, but in the USA we have 24/7 commercials on the TV for mycleanpc.com . It's so scammy/sleezy that it's almost funny. They talk about how to speed up your PC, but I hear their stuff is actually detrimental.

  13. Thanks guys. Carlos, I had McAfee for years then my son was over one day and uninstalled it, then put on Avast. I was NOT happy that he'd done it without my permission but I decided I liked the Avast better. THEN, two or three weeks later, he uninstalled the Avast and put my pc on his Norton 360, again without me being there. Well, after my move 1800 miles away, my pc was off for 7 or 8 months. When I finally got in put together and running, it told me the Norton had expired. It was brand new so I figured it was because of the move. Also, my son had done a reinstall on his own so I don't know which occurrence, his action or my move, caused it to be off on my pc.Anyway, then I was supposed to be put on the Norton here where I live now because you can put as many as 3. Months went my, so I went out and bought my own and installed it. No other anti virus is on as far as I know but I will check the msconfig if I can remember what to do to see if there are any remnants. Dave, I'm pretty leery of things that seem like scams which is why this has all taken so long. Plus, the only reason I didn't get back with the Avast was because I would have had to go online without protection at all. Even though their website would surely have been safe, I was paranoid to be online putzing around till I got it downloaded. Also, I used to have my own connection. Here it is all wireless and I hate it. It is as slow as my old dial up used to be. I'll hold off on the Geek Squad for the time being. I'd heard from a few people that they were good. I'll look in the phone book for some others.

  14. Sorry Dave…I get wordy when I'm stressed and annoyed.

  15. I am too sleepy right now to put it all together and comment.I'll get back to you on Friday, Pam.For now I have to go to sleep.

Wordy is OK. Many of my posts dawdle on and on. I'm rarely concise.

  17. Now for running the avast Uninstall Tool, Pam:Pam, are you familiar with how to Boot Up your computer in Safe Mode? Because the avast Uninstall Tool should really be run in Safe Mode. By now though, in case you don't know how to Boot Up in Safe Mode, it would probably be OK to run the avast Uninstall Tool after a regular Boot Up because your son has already uninstalled avast. Therefore, the Self-Defense function of avast would NOT be likely to be running. So, Pam, download the avast Uninstall Tool:http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear5.exeTry running it for both avast 4.xAnd for avast 5.x since I have no idea which avast version you had.Reboot after running the avast Uninstall Tool.

  18. That's quite a Road Trip of Anti-Virus changes activity, Pam.I can certainly see there being a possibility of remnants lurking around in your computer from even more than one Anti-Virus.If you want to do the equivalent of pressing the Reset Button on your situation and just go back to the avast that you seemed to prefer, here is the link to where you can download the FREE version, which is what I have been using for around 3 years now.http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exeHowever, before installing avast, I'd suggest going through the motions of running the Uninstall Utilies for all 3 of the Anti-Viruses that have existed in your computer. This way you get rid of all possible remnants. Here is a link to the Ultimate List of Uninstallers as far as Anti-Viruses goes:http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/

  19. Now, Pam, let's see about the Norton Uninstall Tool. From that link I provided above, which I'll now provide again below:http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/Scroll down to where it says – Norton / Symantec 2011.Click on the "Tool" link for it there at the Right.Download the Norton / Symantec Uninstall Tool.Follow whatever instructions they give you. That one (Norton / Symantec Uninstall Tool) I have never used. So, I can't say what you can expect.Reboot after running the Norton / Symantec Uninstall Tool.

  20. First of all, Pam, since McAfee was the 1st Anti-Virus you had on there, you might as well run the Uninstall Tool for that one first. Here is the link to where you can download the McAfee Uninstall Tool and how to use it. http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507First peruse all the Info on there because since your son already uninstalled your McAfee, you wouldn't really be performing ALL of those steps. You'll only have to download the MCPR McAfee Uninstall Tool and run it.I have used this MCPR McAfee Uninstall Tool on one of my sisters' computers as well as on one of my computers before. And yeah, even though McAfee had already been uninstalled … this MCPR Tool still found more McAfee Files lurking around and deleted them.Reboot after running the McAfee Uninstall Tool.

  21. holy shit I like how your comment list suddenly became a PC antivirus tech forum!! Haha but oh man if I had a week off drunk and internetting is totally where I would be.

  22. Okay, I guess that makes sense, Pam.As long as that PC slowness doesn't bug you.Should we change the topic to Tacos, Airplanes or Raccoons just for the heck of it? Just Kidding!

  23. Thanks Carlos for all your input. I've copied and saved it for when I need it. I'll switch to Avast when my new store bought anti virus expires. Since I just paid $70 for it, I'll use the year up. Originally posted by elcaminojoe:

Isn't it amazing how that happens?

I enjoy seeing where things go. This one was fun. There's one guy on my friends list who gets all pissy if the topic strays even a little bit. Personally, I don't give a shit, lol. I'm just glad to have activity.Originally posted by elcaminojoe:
