ubuntu upgrade fun

I always look forward to the new releases. If it's April or October, it must be upgrade time.

Natty Narwhal (11.04) seems really splendid. Why am I not surprised. 🙂

Here is a repost of a comment I made in the Kubuntu/Ubuntu Linux users group:

Some upgrade updates from here:

Brian's laptop:

the upgrade was absolutely uneventful. He likes the non-Unity Gnome called Ubuntu Classic. There are a few very minor changes in Gnome, nothing major. Still lovely as ever.

My netbook:

the upgrade was fine, but I was upgrading from a customized Lubuntu (LXDE) installation, and the desktop got a little messy after the upgrade. I decided I was tired of the LXDE anyway, so I did a fresh reinstall of Ubuntu Natty. I have the "/home" on a separate partition anyway, so a reinstall doesn't take long. After the reinstall, I'm trying Unity again after not liking it the first time. It's becoming quite nice. Might keep it.

My honkin' desktop:

It's Debian 7.0 (Wheezy), so the releases are "rolling" instead of "incremental". Upgrades are constant and a little at a time. It's a smooth and beautiful thing. I've heard rumor that Ubuntu is considering rolling releases in the future. Whatever. Both methods seem to work OK.

And that's the way it is. Lovely!

  1. The Natty Narwhal is lovely yes. But 😥 my old computer's hardware is not supporting it. (GRAPHICS AND VIDEOCARD TO SLOW TO CATCH UP)So I stick to the Maverick and the Mint Isadora for the moment.BUT I really like it!Maybe in the near future I will get a new laptop (new work, brand new laptop for free) and then, yes…:D ANYWAY, did you ever try the real Unity Linux? http://unity-linux.org/The fastest system I ever had on my computer and I had a lot the past year.:yikes:

This is the first I've ever heard it it. This will give me something to read this week between shifts. Thanks.

sadly Ubuntu Natty Narhwal hasn't impressed me at all :(I have been on many distro's over the past one week.I tried Debian Squeeze (6.0) , fedora 15 beta, Natty, Chakra.and none of them have come close to my expectation.:(

  4. Oh, I just found your observations elsewhere. Reading them now. Thanks.

We probably do different things with our computers and have different expectations, but Debian and Ubuntu please me greatly. If you feel like elaborating, I'd be interested to hear. You won't get a flame job out of me, hehe. All input can be valuable, and my militant days are over. 😎 I now run what I run because it pleases me, not because I'm part of some movement that needs defending. Heck, I even find the feeling "it just sucks to me" to be a valid reason to use or not use a distro. Some feelings about the two distros I run:Debian: I like to run "testing", which is now called Wheezy, using stock Gnome. Squeeze just entered the "stable" classification, and as a result, over time you'll find the software getting old. Testing is much more fresh. "Unstable" (Sid) is too crazy for me and things break. You probably knew about the various Debians, but some people dropping by might not.I love the Debian Social Contract. I'm into the political/moral realm of software, though "just make it work" ranks highly, too.Ubuntu: It's good enough on the emphasis on free (freedom) for me, and I enjoy the polish and glitz. I'm not sure if I like the new Unity, but I'm going to give it a fair run this time since it seems helpful on a small netbook screen, and my netbook is very small. I doubt I'd run Unity on a desktop, though it is a pretty mother. Unity seems to get in the way a lot, and hide things from me that I like to see, but I'm going to wait and see how I adjust this time rather than dumping it in 2 days like I did the last time. Anyway, those are just some feelings I have about what I usually run.

Keep on searching, there must be a distro that suits you, maybe you can build up one yourself. 😀 (Just kidding, I agree with Dave and his personal vision)Hope you find something for your needs 🙂
