I started eating there several decades ago when I attended university in Raleigh. I used to like to go out drinking with the foreign students, and when the late-night munchies hit, I'd try to get them to go to Char-Grill. It was always a hit. It was fun to sit out front, half gassed at one in the morning, chowing down with friends from Morocco, Iran, Bolivia, Turkey, and other places. They were always delighted. Even now when I eat there, I think of those good old days.
Char-Grill has not changed a bit over the decades. I think it's fine that they raise prices instead of lowering quality and quantity. I think the first time I ate there, a good combo was about $1.50. Now it tops out at over $7. I don't care. It's good stuff.
Image #1: Just a few days ago. I arrived early. They had just opened so there were few customers.
Image #2: Just a few days ago. Same old place it's always been. I thought of my old friends as I took the picture. The way you order is a little strange. At the bottom of the left window under the smaller red sign, there's a slot. You grab an order blank and a pencil. Fill it in and slide it in the slot. Wait for your number to be called. Nothing is cooked in advance.
Image #3: Big-azz cheeseburger. Good too! Forget the impending coronary problems. Just eat.
Image #4: Same place about 24 years ago. 1987, I think. The people are watching a gay pride march go by. You can't see the marchers because the person holding the camera was out there with them. :p 😆
