This man has stood tall for many decades and through many hurricanes. He has delighted many children….in a good way. 😉
I first saw "South of the Border" in the 1960's when riding in the car with my parents on the way to Myrtle Beach. I think I had my father drive under the man every time we went by there. You can imagine the excitement of such a large colorful place out in the middle of nowhere in South Carolina in the 60's. It was a kid's dream. The billboards announcing the mileage to South of the Border stretched for 100's of miles on the 2-lane US and state highways back then. Now that I-95 passes right beside the place, all the billboards were moved to the interstate highway. They are as far north as New York, and as far south as Florida. South of the Border is very pretty at night with all the colorful neon lighting.
Examples of the famous billboards can be seen here on Wikipedia.
